Decatur, Alabama - John Hawkins Vinson, 89, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 15, 2025.

Born on January 5, 1936 in Athens, John was the son of Edward and Jewel Vinson. He was a 20 year U.S. Army veteran and retired from the Postal Service. He had a love for traveling, sports and family. John was known for his steadfastness and dedication, kindness, storytelling and faith. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by sisters, Jean and Betty; grandchildren, Robbie, Tim, Heather, Ashley, Jared, Damein, Logan, Haley and Alantis; great-grandchildren Gabby, Brodie and Palmer; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Audrey; brother, Bill; and sons, Robert, Marland and David.

Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Shelton Funeral Home, 2105 Beltline Road SW, Decatur, with funeral services at 11 a.m., followed by graveside service at Athens City Cemetery.
