Huntsville - Douglas Delano Allen, 92, was born July 17, 1932 in Limestone County Alabama to Lifus Aaron Allen and Mary Louise Allen (Murpity). Douglas passed on June 17, 2025 at Tutt Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Louise; brothers, Charles and Ruedolph; wives Nell (Lamar) Allen, Louise (Beddingfield) Allen, Annie (Hagar) Allen and Fay (Carter) Allen.

He is survived by his daughters, Janice (Doug) Cox and Lisa (Wayne) Chastain of Athens; son, Michael (partner, Maryann Hawley) Eaton, Ohio; grandchildren, David Moyers, Matt Nolley, Jeff Nolley, Christophor Allen, Nick Allen and Shea (Chastain) Scott; great-grandchildren, Hunter Moyers, Navaeh Nolley and Lila Bauer; sisters, Barbara Wales, Carolyn Moore and Norma Prater.

Douglas' memories of childhood in Scottsboro, Alabama included asking for starts of neighbors' flowers and plants to take home and plant. This was the beginning of a lifelong enjoyment of having a nice yard, gardening and landscaping. As a teen, Douglas and his older brother, Charles were tasked with farming the family's 40 acre farm with two unmatched horses — making quite a cotton crop — while their dad worked at Oak Ridge during World War II.

In 1949, Douglas joined the U.S. Air Force, serving four years, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He said that one of his life's regrets was not making a career of the Air Force. On Nov. 6, 1952, he married Nell Lamar of Bell Mina. Of their marriage came Janice, Mike and Lisa.

Upon returning to Limestone County in 1954, he worked various jobs before joining Thiokol Chemical in Huntsville where he worked for 20 years, as a purchasing agent. He tried various ventures including: barber, home construction, convenience store, furniture store, mobile home park and a stint as a union carpenter joining local 1278 Decatur working on projects at TVA Brownsferry, Courtland Paper Mill, and TVA, Iuka, Mississippi.

After retirement, he went camping, traveled and moved often. His last 5 years were spent at Limestone Manor and Tutt Fann Veterans Home, suffering with dementia, macular degeneration and failing health. He often said, I've lived a full life, I'm ready to go. His spirit and perseverance lives on in his children.
