David Houston Martin, Sr.
David passed peacefully on June 29, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Frederick Martin and Mary Houston Martin; and his sister, Mamie Martin Neese.
Survivors include his children, David Houston Martin Jr., Walter Chandler Martin and Mary Tally Watson; mother of the children, Joanna Martin; grandchildren, Jack Watson and Emma Watson; brothers, Fred Martin (Mary Pat) and Richard W. Martin Sr.; brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Neese; and many loving nieces and nephews.
David graduated from Athens High School in 1954. He made the All-State football team his senior season and was offered scholarships at Florida, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Florence State and Middle Tennessee.
He chose Middle Tennessee because it was closer to home. He played two seasons, then transferred to Florence State. He loved Florence State and Coach Hal Self.
At Florence State, he was voted by his teammates and coaches as "Most Valuable Lineman" in 1958 and 1959. He also earned a fourth letter, becoming the third player in UNA history to do so.
He was briefly scouted by the late Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers but was told Green Bay preferred their linemen to be at least 6 feet tall.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Florence State in 1961. He was a student coach and a scout for a year at Florence State.
He returned to Athens after college. He coached for a year at Butler High School and worked at Chrysler Corporation briefly before starting the nursery business. He enjoyed the nursery business for many years. Later in life, he worked for Intergraph, Lowe's, and Athens State College, until his Parkinson's disease made it too difficult to work.
He was voted in 1989 to the All-UNA decade team for the past 40 years, and he was inducted to the Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
David enjoyed many trips and gatherings with his siblings and family. He enjoyed attending UNA sporting events.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Athens First United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
