Nancy Louise Atchley Wales, 66, passed away Jan. 11, 2017, in Little Rock Arkansas, following a long illness. She was born on June 2, 1950, to Cecil and Edith Savage Atchley, in Dayton, Ohio.
Nancy was raised and attended schools in Athens, graduating from Athens High School in 1968. She earned a degree in education from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, in 1971 and began her 30-year career in the Limestone County School System as a reading specialist at Johnson Elementary School, where she met her future husband, Royce Wales.
She later worked for many years as guidance counselor at Clements High School before retiring. Nancy loved music, having played piano, flute, piccolo and oboe. In later years, she thoroughly enjoyed her participation in the Athens Community Band. She also had a keen interest in sewing, quilting and crafts including ceramics and doll making. Along with her Mother, she worked diligently on vegetable gardening and canning.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Royce. She is survived by her sister, Catherine (Paul) Bruhn of Little Rock, Arkansas, and her brother, Cecil (Ann) Atchley, Jr. of Waleska, Georgia, and sister-in-law Joyce Mitchel of Elkmont.
A private graveside service was held Sunday, Jan. 15, at Slone Cemetery, Elkmont. Spry Funeral Home assisted the family.
