Mildred Hargrove Smith, 93, of Athens, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Limestone Health Facility. Mrs. Smith, who was a lifetime resident of Athens, was born on May 1, 1923 to Fount Thomas Hargrove and Maggie Daly Hargrove.
Mildred was a charter member of Friendship Methodist Church. She was known for her cooking for everyone who stopped by. She was a wonderful seamstress who sewed for her entire family. Mildred was a long-time volunteer for the American Red Cross at Athens Limestone Hospital. She did all of this while being a cancer survivor of 44 years.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at Spry Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Green and Scott Gordon officiating with burial at Athens City Cemetery. Visitation is from noon-2 p.m. Thursday at Spry Funeral Home.
Survivors: Daughter, Mary Ann Smith Gordon of Athens; son, Roy Mack Smith and wife Janet of Athens; grandchildren, Scott Gordon and wife Kim, Erik Gordon and Jason Gordon and Amanda Smith; great-grandchildren, Raylan, Haylee, Jacob and Clara; brothers, Paul Hargrove and wife Jeanette of Athens and Jimmy Hargrove of Athens; sister, Mattie Sims of Athens, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, James Croley Smith; sister, Lorene Brooks; brother, Bill Hargrove and Wife Ann; son-in-Law, Ray Gordon.
Pallbearers will be Scott Gordon, Erik Gordon, Jason Gordon, Raylan Gordon, Steve Hargrove, Matt Copeland, Raeph Hargrove, Whit Skipworth, Deon Hargrove and Tim McNeil. Memorials may be made to local chapter of American Cancer Society for breast cancer research or City of Athens Relay for Life.
