Daniel (Danny)'s Story

Dan, 68, died on February 2, 2017, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.
He was born November 2, 1948 in Bayou La Batre, AL to Oliver Dayton Vesper and Hazel Kearley Vesper. Dan was one of 7 siblings with 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Dan was a strong Christian and active member of the United Methodist Church. He was a lay speaker, and a Sunday School teacher. He also actively supported the music ministry of his church by running the audio/video equipment for the choir at services and special events and playing in the handbell choir.
Dan attended Asbury College where his met his wife of 46 years, Sheila Rae Baxter. After marrying Sheila, he served in the US Army for 2 years before beginning a career in IT with IBM in Mobile, AL. He worked for IBM for the next 23 years moving to Alexander City, AL and eventually Atlanta, GA. After leaving IBM, Dan continued his career and in Sept, '08, he accepted an IT position with the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Decatur, AL after he and Sheila had moved to Athens, AL.
While in Athens, Dan and Sheila joined their current church family at Athens First United Methodist Church.
Dan was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, Oscar (Buggs) Vesper; and sister Juanita McRoy. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Vesper; son, Todd Vesper; daughter, Amanda Young (Stephen); three granddaughters, Virginia, Amariah, and Lauren Young; brothers, David Vesper and Troy (Mose) Vesper; sisters, Diane Halbrook (Bobby) and Vera Bosarge (David).
A celebration of Dan's life has been planned for Friday, February 17th, 2017, at Athens First United Methodist Church in Athens, AL. Visitation will be from 9:30am to 11:00am and will be followed by a memorial service led by Rev. Kenny Baskins at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Athens First United Methodist Church or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611.
