Clifton Edward Zirbel, 70, of Athens, AL, died Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Athens Limestone Hospital. The funeral was 12:00 PM, Monday, August 7, 2017, at McConnell Funeral Home, officiated by Bro. Tim Keenum of Sardis Springs Baptist Church. Visitation was held prior to the service and burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Zirbel was born on October 3, 1946, in Athens, to Thomas Edward and Margaret Crouch Zirbel. He was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his father; three brothers, Larry (Merian) Zirbel, Athens, Freddie (Kay) Zirbel, Huntsville, and Mark (Sharon) Zirbel, Athens; six nieces and nephews; eleven great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous Crouch and Zirbel aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mr. Zirbel was a 1964 graduate of Athens High School and served in the United States Coast Guard from February 1966 through January 1972. He worked at Monsanto and Helena Chemical Company, and farmed in the Sardis Springs community.
Pallbearers were nephews Zane Zirbel, John Zirbel, Cole Zirbel, Cooper Zirbel, and life-long friends Jimmy Newby and Jerry Newby. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Vessels, Jack Gilbert, John Bailey, and Cliff Crow.
Memorials may be made to Sardis Springs Baptist Church Building Fund or your favorite charity.
