Betty Bagwell Dowell, 85, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday morning surrounded by loving family. Preceding her in death is her husband of sixty-two years, H.B. "Mike" Dowell (Spider), her son Kendall Dowell, and two older brothers, Wayne Bagwell and Randall Bagwell, both of Canton, GA. She leaves behind her sister Myra Harris of Gainesville, GA, and her children Cindy Newlin (FL), Michael Dowell and Pat Gooch (VA), Jonathan Dowell (TX), Steve and Lana Dowell (IN), Ben Dowell and Mony DeMarco (GA), and Nathan and Danielle Dowell (AL), as well as six adoring grandchildren and four beautiful great-grandchildren.
Betty was born in Canton and graduated from Canton High School and Marion College in Virginia before marriage. Always popular, her bright disposition served her well into adulthood as she touched the lives of so many people. Betty loved to sing and was a member of the choir in just about every church she was ever a member of. She was associated with various church, garden, and social clubs over the years, but her true passion was raising her children. She adored all children, and the feeling was mutual. Children seemed inexplicably drawn to her. It's uncanny how often children in public, strangers, would reach out to her, and she held the hands of many a child as she helped them find their lost parents in stores and parks.
Betty will be remembered most for her genuine kindness. She had a beautiful way of finding the good in every person she ever met, and it's that wonderful trait that will be missed most by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 7, at the First United Methodist Church of Canton and her ashes will be interred with her husband's in a small informal ceremony with a few family and friends at the First Presbyterian Church in Athens, AL, on her birthday, November 21.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor to an organization that's meaningful to you.
